San Cristóbal Through a P+S

October 19, 2010

The second day in San Juan (…back in May), we woke up and looked outside to see the rain pouring down.  😦  But we still had a lot of time before we had to get to the dock to board the cruise, so we planned to get out and visit Castillo de San Cristóbal, the largest fort in Puerto Rico.  El Morro is more popular, but this was closer to our hotel and since we’d be walking, it was easier for our parents.

Because of the rain, I debated on bringing my DSLR or just taking the p+s.  In the end, because the rain was on and off, and the on was really crazy, I ended up taking just my p+s.  I later regretted that I did that, because it never got beyond a drizzle once we were out.  (This however, led to 2 positives: one, I got the G11 just a month later, as a much better p+s than what I had at the time, and two, I’m definitely going back to San Juan!)

However, after re-examining my photos with the Canon SD970, I’m still happy with what I came back with.  I definitely believe in the idea that the best camera is the one you have with you, and I did try to make the most of it at the time.

View of San Cristóbal from Plaza de Colón (Columbus Square)

Unobstructed view

A simple HDR to try to capture the blue sky (no rain, of course!)

I believe this was one of the rooms where they held prisoners

View of the city just beyond the walls

I really like how everything is dark in this except the doorway to the outside

That’s the tail of our ship peeking over the wall!

Old San Juan just beyond the walls

People walking around on the grounds, with the Atlantic just beyond

I love those yellow buildings. Not sure if they are apartments or something else. Anyone know?

A window full of wishing coins

This is one of my favorites!

There was a silver lining when I was there – it was so hot, everyone was constantly sweating, so at least I wasn’t lugging around a big camera bag with me! 🙂

This is beautiful! Love the compositions, the hdrs, saturated colors and dramatic skies! The last photo is a killer!

Oh Preeti, the blue skies in these really add to the beauty. Great job with the HDR, they really pop! That doorway with the dark edges and light is amazing, gothic, otherworldly! I went to PR when I was 5 yrs old so unfortunately remember nothing, but I’d love to go back! With my camera, of course! Do they have good shopping? 🙂
    Happy weekend!
